This year’s theme is “Healing on the French Prairie,” with a portrayal of experiences related to pioneer health and healing.

Francois X. Matthieu

He may or may not ‘appear’ in this year’s performances, but among the historically significant people interred in Butteville’s Cemetery is Francois X. Matthieu. He was Canada-born in 1818 and died in 1914. Matthieu was the last survivor of the 52 people forming the first civil government west of the Rocky Mountains. The approximately 90-minute tour ends with strawberry shortcake served in the restored Donald Manson 1860’s barn at Champoeg Park. The cost is $20 per person.

Paid reservations are required for ‘Cemetery Sagas.’ A $5 vehicle parking fee or an annual state parks pass is also required. For more information, contact Interpretive Park Ranger Daniel Klug at 503-678-1251 Extension #222 (office), 503-551-7808 (mobile) or via email at Daniel.Klug@oregon.gov.
